Clear Silky Skin Secret: Pillows

Keep your hands out of your face.

These are all excellent skincare secrets, but I am starting this secret series to discuss tips that are forgotten or seldom discussed. My first topic is pillows.

We may change our sheets as often as we deem necessary. Experts recommend weekly or bi-weekly by the way. However, how often are you washing your pillows? Dirt, makeup, eye/nose liquids, and drool can make its way through your pillowcases and into the fibers of your cushions. Night after night, these things collect and become a breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites, and other unseen haters. Think about it. You are resting your beautiful face and neck on this daily for a third of the day. Don’t you think dirty pillows can clog pores? (My pillow is not shown below.)

The When and How

I try and wash my pillows every other week. I have an old school top loading washer with an agitator so I wash my pillows two at a time without anything else in the machine. The two pillows keep the washing machine in balance during the spin cycle. The photo below from wikihow shows you what I do. Just imagine chocolaty forearms/hands with bright nails.


I wash them with a cup of bleach and a scoop of washing powder. To dry my pillows, it typically takes three cycles in the dryer to dry them no matter which setting I use.

Why you should do this

Clean pillows help with clear skin and also help allergy sufferers by reducing irritants. So, when did you last wash your pillows? Do it now.
